Local Leader Receives Scouting’s Highest Honor

Michael Goodrich to be honored for decades of service to Scouting


San Diego, CAMay 23, 2008BE&K Inc. President and CEO Michael Goodrich has made a significant impact on thousands of youth through his volunteer leadership in the Boy Scouts of America. For his three decades of service to youth, the BSA National Council will honor him with the Silver Buffalo Award at its Annual Meeting in San Diego on May 23.

            The Silver Buffalo Award, Scouting’s highest commendation for service to youth, has been awarded annually since 1925 to civic-minded men and women who stand out for their invaluable contributions and service to the youth of America.

A leader in the Birmingham business community, Goodrich utilizes his corporate talents in developing endowment support for the BSA. On numerous occasions, he has hosted local, regional, and national endowment prospects on visits to national Scout jamborees, National Annual Meetings, and the Philmont Scout Ranch.

A member of the BSA National Executive Board since 2000, Goodrich has served on the Program, Supply, Nominating, and National Scout Jamboree Site committees. From 2001 to 2007, he chaired the Boy Scout Committee. Additionally, Goodrich actively participates in the leadership roles for the Southern Region and the Greater Alabama Council.

A Distinguished Eagle Scout, Goodrich previously has received the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope awards.

“Not only is Michael a distinguished Scout himself, but he also has dedicated his life to serving our youth,” said Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive. “The Boy Scouts of America is proud to recognize his decades of service. We are grateful for his commitment to ensuring today’s Scouts receive the same beneficial experiences as he did.”

Goodrich’s other community activities include involvement with South Highland Presbyterian Church, Leadership Alabama, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Diabetes Trust Fund, the Girls Club of Birmingham, the Kirklin Clinic’s Health Services Foundation, and numerous professional organizations.

He is chairman and CEO of BE&K Inc., a Birmingham-based engineering and construction firm. Goodrich and his wife, Gillian, have four children and four grandchildren.
