New Requirements for 2009 PDF Print E-mail
The requirements for many Merit Badges changed on January 1, 2009. On August 1, 2008, all Merit Badge pamphlets were reprinted with color photographs, diagrams, and covers effective August 1, 2008. The actual text and requirements in most cases did not change from the previous editions.

The requirements for the following Merit Badges have changed:
Archery, Architecture & Landscape Architecture, Automotive Maintenance, Cinematography, Coin Collecting, Collections, Drafting, Emergency Preparedness, Engineering, Farm Mechanics, Indian Lore, Insect Study, Lifesaving, Motorboating, Painting, Pottery, Radio, and Swimming.

In addition, the requirements for Mile Swim and Den Chief Service Award have changed. The Auto Mechanics merit badge was replaced with badge Automotive Maintenance. Architecture and Landscape Architecture Merit Badges were combined into a single book.

All Merit Badge Workbooks are updated.

Please make sure the workbook you are using is the most current version. Troops that own Merit Badge Libraries, please update your workbook selection to include the newest versions.

Boy Scout Requirement Changes Policy
The requirements for rank advancement, Eagle Palms, and merit badges are effective January 1, 2009, through December 31, 2009. The requirements listed in the 2009 Boy Scout Requirements book are the official requirements of the Boy Scouts of America. These merit badge requirements also appear on the BSA's official Web site http://www.scouting.org.

If a Scout has already started working on a merit badge when a new edition for the pamphlet is introduced, he may continue to use the same merit badge pamphlet and fulfill the requirements therein to earn the badge. He need not start all over again with the new pamphlet and possibly revised requirements.
